The debate over off-leash park space in Vancouver is expected to heat up this week, as the park board holds public forums in an effort to find a compromise solution to the ongoing controversy.

Many dog owners argue there should be more off-leash areas, noting that dogs can only run free in 31 of the city's 221 parks.

As a result, some downtown residents let their dogs run free illegally, saying they have no real choice.

However, other park users say there are already too many dogs running free, and say they're afraid that some of them could get out of control and hurt someone.

Park board commissioner Ian Robertson said he gets a lot of pressure from people on both sides of what he calls an "emotional" issue.

"We probably get more e-mails regarding dogs than we do on any other issue that the park board has to deal with."

In May, the board created a special dog strategy task force to deal with the issue.

Robertson hopes that after the public consultations, the task force will be able come up with some recommendations by the end of next year.
