Tens of thousands still in the dark in B.C.

About 32,000 B.C. homes and businesses from Vancouver Island to Chilliwack were still without power Friday in the aftermath of the huge storm that hammered the South Coast on Wednesday.
B.C. Hydro spokeswoman Elisha Moreno said late Friday of that figure, 20,000 were located in the Fraser Valley.
Hydro crews have been working to restore power to tens of thousands of people since the big storm hit B.C. on Wednesday.

Crews have reconnected more than 110,000 customers in the past day. At the peak of the storm on Wednesday, more than 200,000 homes were in the dark.
"We are definitely much further ahead than we expected to be, and that is something our crews can be commended for. Considering the extensive damage that happened over the last day, we're really happy about where we are," Moreno said earlier in the day.
Residents of Lions Bay and some smaller communities on Vancouver Island —including Bamfield and Nitinat — are expected to be without power most of the weekend.
There are also some road closures on the Island.
Highway 28 is closed between Gold River and Campbell River. The Head Bay Road —the only road link between Tahsis and the rest of the Island — could be closed for up to a week.
