The B.C. man who slammed a stolen pickup truck into the side of a police cruiser in Vernon two years ago killing an auxiliary Mountie has been found guilty of criminal negligence causing death.

Michael O'Brien, 25, of Vernon was also convicted of criminal negligence causing bodily harm for severely injuring a second RCMP officer in the car.

Const. Glen Evely, 39, who had been an auxiliary officer in the Okanagan city for two years, was killed instantly in the crash. His partner, 20-year veteran Const. Frank Grenier, suffered a serious brain injury and was in a coma for months.

O'Brien said he was high on cocaine and was trying to outrun police at the time of the fatal accident.

He admitted he was driving dangerously, but had argued he was not guilty of criminal negligence.

But B.C. Supreme Court Justice Allison Deans disagreed, saying O'Brien showed "wanton and reckless" disregard for public safety.

Evely's day job was with the B.C. Forest Service, and a dozen B.C. Forest Service employees joined more than two dozen RCMP officers in court on Thursday to hear the verdict.

O'Brien could face a life term when he is sentenced on Friday.
