The small group of squatters occupying an abandoned hotel in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside say they won't leave until they get a meeting with Mayor Sam Sullivan to discuss homelessness in the city.

They want the mayor to commit to a strategy to address the problem

The squatters, who moved into the old North Star Hotel on Sunday, say police have given them a 1 p.m. (PT) deadline to vacate.

Police issued the deadline after being asked by the building's owner to remove the protesters.

Protest spokeswoman Jill Chettiar says they're not going to give in, and have barricaded the building to make it harder for police to arrest them.

"We're not leaving without being taken out, and police have developed an operational plan to make that happen. That looks like that's what's going to happen at 1 o'clock if Sam doesn't show up.

"There are no plans to resist arrest. It's a peaceful demonstration. So they'll come in and take people out."

Victoria police used tear gas and a police dog to end a one-man protest occupation of a derelict building in the capital city on Monday.

The protester was taken away in handcuffs, as an angry crowd hurled insults at police and voiced their frustration over homelessness.
