A private career college in Vancouver that is under government investigation and being sued by its students has closed its doors.
City Tech College in Vancouver was being investigated by the Ministry of Advanced Education for irregularities involving student loans to foreign students.
Earlier this summer, the B.C. Student Assistance Program ordered about 70 students to pay back thousands of dollars in student loans, saying they weren't eligible for the money.
The students claim advisers at the school helped them with the applications, and in some cases filled out the forms for them.
They're now suing the school for misleading them and falsifying their applications.
Happening too often, says NDP
Rob Fleming, the NDP critic for Advanced Education, says these sorts of stories are becoming more common in B.C.
"We've seen a lot of businesses set up that have misled students. There are many allegations about fees being paid for services, and education programs promised and simply not delivered."
Fleming says the provincial government needs to do more to help students in this situation.
Calls by CBC News to City Tech were not returned, but in the past the college has denied any wrongdoing.
