Two Coquitlam RCMP officers have been charged with assault and obstruction of a police officer following an off-duty incident at a local restaurant.

The charges follow a confrontation that Const. Darryl Tsui and Const. Dennis Reddy had with three men at a Coquitlam restaurant on April 1.

The three other men were subsequently arrested by on-duty Mounties. The charges against Tsui and Reddy stem from actions they allegedly took as the other men were taken into custody.

Coquitlam RCMP Const. Dave Babineau says the incident prompted the same sort of criminal investigation that would have occurred if the suspects had been civilians.

"In this particular instance, it was deemed there was sufficient information to proceed with charges," he said.

Babineau wouldn't go into more detail about what allegedly happened that night, however he did say that Tsui and Reddy acted uncharacteristically.

Both officers remain on duty. They are scheduled to appear in court next month.
