A 47-year-old who was beaten until he was unconscious by a group of young men outside his East Vancouver home told CBC News that he can't work and won't be able to drive for about a year.

The man — who asked that his name not be used — had gone outside to investigate screeching tires and loud noise when he was attacked in the early morning of Aug. 6, near 41st Avenue and Fraser Street.

The East Vancouver man was on the phone to the 911 dispatcher when he was beaten until he was unconscious.

The computer information technologist says he spotted two dark four-door cars and called police.

"They were going down 39th, and coming back around and stopped. So I dialed 911 and talked loud enough to be heard by them. "

While still on the phone with the dispatch operator, he was swarmed by at least five young men.

"And then I was hit in the head. I couldn't see anything," he told CBC News.

Scarred in different ways

He suffered severe head trauma, which led to emergency neurosurgery, leaving him with a scar and constant pain.

"I can't walk as far as I used too. If I overextend myself, my body reacts like not normally as expected."

He says he thinks the group was looking for someone to attack. "They actually wanted somebody to come out, and [I think] that it was sort of choreographed."

The man says he can't work or drive because doctors fear he could still suffer brain seizures.

Police say they're still looking for the suspects, and are following up on several leads.
