The RCMP are defending their actions in an early-morning police chase Tuesday that ended in a crash in Richmond that left a middle-aged man dead.
The incident began in Vancouver, where police say they spotted a vehicle being driven by a woman in violation of her bail conditions, and made several attempts to stop it.
The driver got away and headed south into Richmond where an RCMP officer picked up the chase, trying unsuccessfully to pull the car over.
A short time later, the Hyundai ran a red light and smashed into a minivan, killing a Richmond man in his 50s.

RCMP spokesman Cpl. Tom Seaman says the driver of the suspect vehicle is to blame for the man's death, and not police.
"It may not have happened had the police not been pursuing her, that could very well be," Seaman said. "But our job in the patrol section is to stop and check vehicles as a part of our responsibility to the communities that we serve."
Seaman said the Richmond Mountie involved in the incident "followed all procedures" as well as the RCMP policy for initiating chases.
RCMP Cpl. Tom Seaman says police are not to blame for the fatal crash.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, a woman in her 30s, has been arrested, and charges are expected.
The victim's name has not been released.
