Search and rescue teams have resumed their search for a 60-year-old kayaker missing off the northwest coast of Vancouver Island.

The man had been paddling alone for several days in the Brooks Peninsula area, a rugged section of coast that was exposed to gale-force winds last week.

The coast guard says he had planned to meet up on Monday with the Uchuck III, a passenger and freight vessel that serves Nootka Sound.

However, the paddler never showed up, and the search began on Tuesday.

A Canadian Forces Cormorant helicopter and Buffalo aircraft from CFB Comox are scouring the area with help from two coast guard vessels and several private boats.

The man's name has not been released.
