Vancouver police are investigating the discovery of the body of a woman on Monday morning near the steps of city hall at 10th and Yukon.

They were called by a passerby who had been walking through the grounds at about 9:30 a.m. and spotted the body in a bush area by a set of stairs on the west side of the city hall annex.

The steps have been marked off with yellow police tape as investigators go through the small park looking for clues, taking notes and pictures. They're also taking down licence plate numbers of nearby parked cars.

Spokesperson Const. Tim Fanning says investigators from the major crime unit still don't have any information as to the identity of the woman.

"I can tell you at this point, it appears to be suspicious, that it is a woman. But as far as race, age, any other information, we don't have that at this point."

Police are appealing to the public for help, asking anyone who has been in the area in the past few days and noticed anything to call them.

Fanning says it's possible the body had been in the bushes for some time.

Meanwhile, the city has issued a statement saying they have no reason to believe the body is that of anyone who works there. It also says the area may remain closed for days.
