A bear attack has left a man with scratches and forced the closure of trails in Squamish's Merrill Park, located in the Garibaldi Highlands neighbourhood.

According to the District of Squamish, a couple was walking in the trails Sunday afternoon when they surprised the black bear sow and her cub.

The sow charged the man, leaving him with injuries that are not considered serious.

Traps have been set and people are asked to stay clear of the area until further notice.

Squamish is considered prime bear habitat and bear sightings are common.

All bear sightings should be reported to the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).
