A plume of smoke has been spotted rising from trees on Grouse Mountain near the west side of Capilano Lake.

West Vancouver Fire Chief Martin Ernst says it's believed the fire started from a burning stump that might have been caused by lightning.

He says crews will monitor it closely overnight. He says with the current moisture in the environment, the risk of it spreading is low.

Ernst says the Coastal Fire Centre has been notified in case they need to "hit it in the morning" from the air.

At this point he says the smoke is well up the mountain, in a hard-to-reach area far from populated areas.

No homes are at risk.
