RCMP cruiser set ablaze in Kootenay community

RCMP in the B.C. Kootenay community of New Denver are asking the public for help in figuring out who set one of their cruisers on fire a few days before Christmas.

Police won't speculate if arson may be linked to tension over marijuana production

RCMP in the B.C. Kootenay community of New Denver are asking the public for help in figuring out who set one of their cruisers on fire a few days before Christmas.

Police say on Dec. 19 at around 2:45 a.m. PT, officers at the Slocan Lake detachment responded to a report of a vehicle on fire in front of the detachment.

When they arrived, they found the front of a police cruiser engulfed in flames. The vehicle was destroyed by the fire.

Cpl. Ryan Fehler says it's a serious offence and police want to know if members of the public saw anything suspicious.

Like many Kootenay communities, the Slocan Valley is known for its marijuana production, which often pits locals against police.

But Fehler would not say if there is a connection between the arson and the valley's biggest export.
