Ralph Bower photo exhibit opens at Hastings Racecourse
Award-winning photojournalist captured life on and off the track over the span of 40 years
From celebrities to no-name jockeys weighing in before races, award-winning photojournalist Ralph Bower has captured the faces and the stories of the track over the course of a 40-year career.
“Well the story is that this is a big community of on-track off-track people, and I guess that I’ve used a professional snapshot approach to what they do," says Bower.
Now, for a limited time, he's opening the coffers of his one-of-a-kind catalogue to offer up those rare glimpses of racecourse life to the public.
Starting this Monday at noon, hundreds of his photos will be on display at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver.
In them, Bower has captured some of the most intimate and memorable moments in the history of horse racing in Vancouver.
"Some of the shots he has, people just won’t believe it," says Greg Douglas, a spokesperson for the racecourse and a long-time friend of Bower's. "It’s going to blow them away."
The exhibit will be open until the end of horse racing season, later this fall.
