Abbotsford police say a person walking along the Fraser River off Walters Street in north Abbotsford around 8 a.m. PT Sunday found what appeared to be human remains entangled in debris at the water's edge.

Abbotsford police say they have called in their forensic identification team and have brought in detectives from their major crimes unit.

Spokesperson Ian Macdonald says police are attempting to extricate the apparently decomposed remains for further examination and investigation.

"We are in the earliest stages of investigation and more information will be released after a recovery is complete."
