A woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a pickup truck went barrelling into the Surrey, B.C., bus stop bench where she and another woman were waiting.

RCMP Sgt. Dale Carr said the incident began with a two-vehicle collision in the intersection of 148 Street and 88 Avenue, bordering the Fleetwood and Newton neighbourhoods shortly after 8 a.m. PT.

Several witnesses said a GMC van was heading south on 148 Street and was hit by a Tacoma pickup truck heading west on 88th Avenue, Carr said.

Both drivers remained at the scene, he said.

The area was closed to traffic as investigators began working to determine what the drivers were doing just before the collision happened.

Police are asking any other witnesses to come forward.
