Ridge Meadows RCMP said a man was struck by a car at around 8:30 p.m. PT in the 23900 block of the Lougheed Highway. Sgt. Dale Somerville said "valiant attempts" were made to save the man, but he was pronounced dead at Ridge Meadows Hospital.
Somerville said in a written statement that many of the immediate witnesses, including the driver, were also injured.
He said that just after the pedestrian was struck, another car that came to a stop to avoid the collision scene was rear-ended by a pickup truck. The occupants of that car were taken to hospital with what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Somerville said Lougheed was closed to westbound traffic for some time so that police could begin their investigation.
"The crash occurred in a very dark area of the Lougheed Highway. It was not raining at the time, but roads were wet and slippery," he said.
"We have not established a cause, or had a chance to speak with all witnesses," he said Saturday night.
