On the Coast's Weekend Picks for May 30-June 2

From Fred Penner to craft beer to a community pizza-eating contest, we've got your weekend covered.

Get ready to dance, play and eat and drink this weekend in Metro Vancouver

The Mount Pleasant community is holding a pizza-eating contest on Sunday (CBC)

Now that we're heading into the summer months, we should see more events on the street and outdoors, if this weekend is any indication.

We've got some ideas for how to fill your calendar, whatever your mood, from a boat cruise to children's musician Fred Penner to a community pizza-eating contest.

1. City of Bhangra

It's the 10th anniversary of the City of Bhangra Festival in Surrey and Vancouver. It's a 10-day dance party featuring music and moves from the Punjabi community in India and Pakistan.

This year's theme is #BhangraLove and participants include Pakistani Sufi musician Saieen Zahoor and Bhangra teams from B.C. and California.

2. Vancouver International Children's Festival

Fred Penner is one of the featured performers at the Vancouver Children's Festival. (Vancouver International Children's Festival)

Touch life-sized dinosaurs, dance and sing with entertainer Fred Penner, and watch a circus interpretation of Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass" at the annual festival.

There's much more on stage at the festival's headquarters on Granville Island.

3. Community Pizza Eating Contest

Head down to Main and 3rd in Vancouver and watch the community pizza-eating contest. Or if you're lucky you've already got one of the spots to eat the pizza!

In appreciation of pizza and Vancouver, there will be a cash prize for the winner, and live music. What better reason to gather than for the love of pie?

4. Vancouver Craft Beer Week

Vancouver Craft Beer Week features an official beer made by local breweries. (Vancouver Craft Beer Week)

The theme for the popular annual craft beer celebration is "It's a Rap" so I guess people are encouraged to throw on their Adidas track suits and bring their bling!

This is a not-to-be-missed event for craft beer lovers, where some of the local breweries get together to make unique collaboration brews. There are lots of events this year that focus on beer and food pairings. Many of the events sell out.

5. Philippine Indigenous Arts Festival

Mayo Landicho is one of the artists featured at UBC's Philippine Indigenous Arts Festival (Mayo Landicho)

The event is organized by UBC and the Kathara Pilipino Indigenous Arts Collective Society. The festival features dancers, choreographers, and special guests such as Vancouver-based tattoo-artist Mayo Landicho, and author and artist Grace Nono.

The event includes lectures, performances and of course, food.

6. Surrey Human Library

If you're curious about different faiths and you want to learn more from people passionate about their religion, head to the Surrey Library, where you can book a one-on-one interview with a pastor, a Muslim scholar, a Catholic, a Mormon and a Pagan, among others.

7. The Invisible Orange Metal Cruise

One of our show members is particularly passionate about her metal music... and she flagged this as one of the best weekend events on her list. Don't worry if the weather's sunny, she says heavy-metal shirts come in short sleeves too.

What to expect: a four-hour cruise while listening to live metal music by Nylithia, Over the Coals, and ExPain, with fellow metal-heads. Need we say more?
