Police in New Westminster, B.C, have identified Surrey resident Nathan McVannell as the man allegedly involved in a police-involved shooting on Jan. 15.

McVannell, 32, was taken to hospital in critical condition in the aftermath of the shooting near the Walmart in New Westminster's Queensborough neighbourhood.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO), which provides civilian oversight of serious police incidents, has taken over the investigation.

According to the IIO, New Westminster police were called to the vicinity of the Walmart around 12 p.m. PT Friday after reports a man was causing a disturbance.

Police said one man was taken into custody without incident, but after they arrived there was an interaction with a second man, who was subsequently shot. They said a firearm was recovered from the scene. 

McVannell has been charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault.
  • Use of a firearm while committing or attempting to commit an indictable offence.
  • Pointing a firearm.
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm.
  • Resisting arrest.
  • Theft.
  • Breach of firearms prohibition.

The B.C. Ambulance Service said McVannell had been taken to hospital in critical condition.

Police said the other man, Henry Bennett Smith of Langley, B.C., has been charged with breach of probation.
