A mother and her 18-month-old baby, who were swept away in the waters of Puntledge River near Courtenay, B.C., have been pulled out Friday afternoon. 

There's no word yet on how they came to be in the water. 

Witnesses say they saw the pair in the water near the Condensory Bridge around 2:30 p.m. PT.

The child was recovered first around 3 p.m. and the mother was pulled out shortly after 4 p.m. The pair were both rushed to hospital and were in critical condition.
