Jockey Mario Gutierrez returned to Vancouver's Hastings Racecourse on Monday to ride in two races, placing fourth in the Lieutenant Governor's Handicap riding St Liam's Halo.

The Great Canadian Gaming Corporation also unveiled a statue honouring the Mexican-born jockey who trained in Vancouver and came close to winning the Triple Crown recently.

Howard Blank of the gaming corporation says the company thought it was important to have a special tribute to Gutierrez whose colours will now be in the winner's circle forever.

Gutierrez won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness but was forced to pull out of the Belmont Stakes because of an injury to his horse, I'll Have Another.
