The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has extended a warning about certain Daniella brand mangoes because of possible Salmonella bacteria contamination.

The affected mangoes, which are grown in Mexico, now include individual fruits sold between July 12 and Aug. 31, 2012.

The mangoes were sold at stores in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon as individual fruit with a sticker bearing PLU. 4959.

There have been several confirmed illnesses associated with the mangoes. The importer, North American Produce Sales of Vancouver, has recalled the fruit and the CFIA is monitoring the recall.

Food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria may not look or smell spoiled but eating food containing this bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a form of gastroenteritis.

Salmonellosis usually presents with a high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.

In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis can cause serious and sometimes deadly infections.
