A man found dead in a Vancouver apartment Saturday was the city's first murder of the year, police say.

Police say Christopher Denis Kwik, 40, was found shot in an apartment at 2425 Granville Street by an individual checking on the unit. Kwik did not live there.

Vancouver Police Const. Brian Montague said Kwik has had "minor contact" with police in the past and was due in court this year.

"He was scheduled to appear in court some time this year for an incident that occurred last year, back in November in Vancouver, where he was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking," Montague told reporters Sunday.

Police say the person who discovered the body called police shortly before 11 p.m., but Montague said the victim was killed earlier in the day.

"It appears that he had been deceased for some time in the building prior to us being notified."

There were 15 homicides in 2015, Montague said. In two of those incidents, the victims were shot and killed.
