Michael Melvin Williams was charged after Spencer Chandra Herbert's assistant was punched
A 53-year-old Vancouver man has been charged after allegedly assaulting an office assistant of a member of B.C.'s legislative assembly last week.
Michael Melvin Williams was arrested on Feb. 24 near MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert's Vancouver-West End constituency office, shortly after the politician's office assistant was punched in the face by an intoxicated man
Williams has been charged with assault and mischief under $5,000.
Chandra Herbert, who is openly gay, told reporters at the time the man was apparently angry about a rainbow flag that hangs in the front window of his office, and about another rainbow flag that is displayed in a window at the West End Community Centre.
The Vancouver Police Hate Crimes Unit had been investigating the incident.
Williams' next court appearance is scheduled for April 4 at 2 p.m. PT at Downtown Community Court in Vancouver.
