A Vancouver team that specializes in disaster response has been deployed to Calgary in the aftermath of severe flooding.
The Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Team flew to Alberta last night.
Team leader Jim Young says the crew is always prepared, and they know Calgary needs them.
"They've got lots of equipment resources, but they're getting wore out in terms of staffing, and specifically when I say staffing I'm talking about the expertise that we bring in our all-hazards approach, heavy urban search and rescue."
Vancouver police Const. Kathleen Tchang, who was part of a relief team that helped in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, says her team is eager to help.
"If I was the one being helped and I saw people coming to help me that would really get me," she said.
"It's just so much that somebody is there to help you when you need it right then and there, and it's a human element, and that's what really gets me. That is why this is such an opportunity that is really wonderful with our team."
Thirty team members flew out Thursday night, while 20 others are ready to go if needed.
