Firefighters are battling a blaze that has gutted a vacant seniors' home in Maple Ridge, B.C.

Officials from the Kanaka Creek Seniors Lodge said they were told by neighbours the entire building at 256th Street and 116th Avenue has been engulfed.

They also believe this morning's fire may have been suspicious.

Heini Edberg, who lives across the street from the home, said his wife woke him up around 5 a.m. PT this morning after hearing the sound of small explosions.

"I looked out and I saw that the whole Kanaka Lodge was burning — the whole structure," said Edberg.

"My impression was that the fire people they more or less let it burn down because there's not really very much to save."

The home is currently unoccupied.

It was evacuated following another fire at the same seniors centre four weeks ago, on January 9.

  • A previous version of this story stated the initial fire occurred two weeks ago. In fact, it took place four weeks ago.
