RCMP say a man with a loaded rifle was arrested Thursday outside the library in downtown Kamloops, B.C.

At around 2:20 p.m.Thursday, the Kamloops RCMP Crime Reduction Unit arrested the man near the downtown branch of the Kamloops Public Library, on the corner of Victoria Street and 5th Avenue.

"Incidental to the arrest, police found a loaded firearm with the man," Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said in a release. 

The 39-year-old man from Kamloops was previously known to police.

He is expected to appear in court Friday. 

The B.C. Prosecution Service will assess the evidence and determine any criminal charges.
