Teck Resources says a power outage is to blame for an incident late Wednesday night at its lead smelter operations in Trail, B.C.

Some residents in the city took to Twitter last night saying there was fire and a cloud of smoke of some sort over the smelter.

Trail Fire and Rescue dispatch confirmed there was an incident last night at the smelter, but it was not called to help.

"A power outage has occurred at Trail Operations triggering audible alarms which crews are responding to. Contrary to some reports there is no fire at the operation and there is no risk to public safety," Teck stated on Twitter.

It's not known what impact a loss of power in part of the smelter would have.
