Nothing sucks the fun out of summer like mosquitoes. Biologist Dirk Lewis works in the Fraser Valley Regional District each year, where he finds and destroys the larvae before they can mature.

Here's his advice for keeping the pests at bay:

Get rid of standing water.

Mosquitoes need water for the part of their lifecycle. Lewis says to clean out buckets, bird baths, gutters, and anything else that holds water.

Keep grass cut.

Lewis says mosquitoes like a place to harbour from the elements. He says mosquitoes will use grass to hide from the summer sun during the day, but will come out in the evening, just in time to ruin a barbecue.

Mosquito-proof your house.

Use screens on windows or doors to make sure mosquitoes stay out of your house.
