Hospital thief targets mother in maternity ward
North Vancouver RCMP say suspect spotted on Lions Gate Hospital security camera
Police in North Vancouver are circulating a photo of a man who allegedly walked into the maternity ward at Lions Gate Hospital Monday and stole the wallet from a mother who was busy looking after her newborn.
North Vancouver RCMP Cpl. Richard De Jong calls the theft "shameless."
"The mother in the maternity ward had just left her room to nurse her newborn baby boy and when she returned, she discovered that someone had stolen her wallet from the drawer in her bed," he told CBC News.
Hospital staff found the wallet in a garbage can a short time after the woman noticed it was missing, but $300 cash had been taken from it.
De Jong said it was fortunate, at least, that a clear image of the apparent culprit was captured on a hospital security camera.
Now, police are sharing the photo with the public in the hopes that someone recognizes the alleged thief.
The image shows a slender man with glasses and a black backpack leaving the area around the time of the theft, which would have been around 1 p.m. PT Monday.
