One person is dead and another is in hospital, after a two vehicle crash on Highway 97 near 70 Mile House, about 120 kilometres northwest of Kamloops, B.C., on Tuesday morning.

According to an RCMP news release, officers and emergency responders were dispatched to the scene at around 8:15 a.m. PT. after a northbound vehicle crossed a four-lane roadway and hit a vehicle heading south.

The driver of the northbound vehicle was killed. The driver of the southbound vehicle was transported to hospital, but their condition is not known. 

There were no passengers in either vehicle. Neither driver has been identified.

RCMP members from Clinton and 100 Mile House detachments are currently on scene. A collision re-constructionist from Kamloops and an Ashcroft traffic services investigator are currently en route. 

Highway 97 is closed in both directions 20 kilometres north of 70 Mile House. However, DriveBC says a local detour is available.

The highway is expected to reopen between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
