Heavy snow raises avalanche risk, closes B.C. highways
Highways 1, 3 and 5 all affected by heavy snow on Wednesday morning
A heavy snowfall has raised the avalanche risk across B.C., closing some highway passes while crews clear the slopes.
The Trans-Canada Highway will be closed in both directions between Golden and Glacier National Park and east of Revelstoke for extended times on Wednesday. Check DriveBC for updates.
Highway 3 will also be closed at Kootenay Pass at times on Wednesday morning, and heavy snow is expected to create delays on the Coquihalla Highway 5 between Hope and Merritt.
The heavy snow has also raised the avalanche risk in the backcountry to high across most mountain areas of southern B.C.
On the ski hills Whistler Blackcomb is reporting 48 centimetres of fresh snow in the past 48 hours, while Cypress Mountain Resort is reporting 15 centimetres of new snow in the last 24 hours.
