One person has been rushed to hospital with second and third degree burns following an explosion at a home in the Royal Heights area of Surrey, B.C., on Monday.
Surrey Fire battalion chief Steve Zecchel said two people were in the house, which was fully engulfed by fire when crews arrived.
"One person made it out, he was fine. The other person is gone [to hospital] with second and third degree burns," he said.
The injured man was rushed to the burn unit at Vancouver General Hospital.
Zecchel said the explosion was first reported by a neighbour in the complex.
Crews from three different fire halls responded, and because of extensive structural damage could only fight the house fire from outside.
"The place will need to be knocked down, it's totally destroyed," Zecchel said.
Zecchel said Surrey Fire and the RCMP are investigating the explosion, but at this point it is not considered suspicious.
