Friends of a young man killed in a car crash in downtown Vancouver last week are remembering him as a dedicated student and passionate man.

International student Mwekwa Kaongwa was killed when the car he was driving crashed on the Georgia Viaduct Friday morning.

Kaongwa, 24, from Zambia, was studying engineering at Simon Fraser University.

On Sunday, those who knew him gathered for a memorial service at the SFU campus in Surrey.

Friend Mica-El Mumba said the loss is devastating.

"What I want them to know most about him is that he was a very open guy, very loving guy. And he used to work very hard. He was very passionate about what he did and I know that that passion was very contagious. And he was a great guy," Mumba said.

Police say speed was definitely a factor in the crash that killed Kaongwa. (CBC)

Three other friends, also from Zambia, were seriously injured in the crash and remain in hospital, but are expected to survive.

Police said speed was a factor in the single-vehicle crash of the BMW, which flipped over and was destroyed.
