The Vancouver Canucks will retire former star player Markus Naslund's No. 19 jersey at Rogers Arena on Dec. 11, the team announced Wednesday night.

Naslund played for the Canucks from 1996 until 2008, racking up 756 points for the Vancouver club.

He was the team's captain for eight of those years.

Naslund retired from the NHL in 2009 after playing one season with the New York Rangers.

In the rare event that a player's number is retired, his jersey is usually hoisted to a special area in the rafters of his former home arena and no future player can use the number.

Stan Smyl and Trevor Linden are the only other Canucks to have their numbers retired in the team's 40-year history.
