Porn takes over Barriere Chamber of Commerce website

The Barriere Chamber of Commerce let ownership of its domain name lapse over the Christmas holidays. Now, the new owner is hosting a porn website with the URL.

WARNING: Visiting barrierechamber.com will take you to a website with explicit pornographic images

Welcome to PornoLaba, the new owner of barrierechamber.com.

The Barriere Chamber of Commerce exists to promote business in the community — but ironically, its new website is NSFW (Not Safe For Work).

The Chamber used a GoDaddy account for its website but forgot to set it up for automatic renewal. The chamber lost its domain name, and unfortunately for them, a porn site took it over and won't give it back.

The URL, barrierechamber.com, now redirects to a website called PornoLaba which features images that have little if anything to do with business in the north Thompson Valley town.

"I've contacted the person who bought the site and registered it. He came back with $9,700 to buy the site back. It's a $20 domain!" said Marie Downing, the chamber's administrator.

"I told him we're a chamber of commerce in a little tiny town of 1,000 people. We don't have that kind of money. We're non-profit. It's ridiculous."

Downing called the domain's new owner's actions "disgusting," but believes there's nothing she can legally do to get the domain back.

"It was messed up on our end. We missed the renewal during the holiday season. It's just one of those things," she said.

Downing notes that the chamber still has ownership of several other similar domain names, and they will still redirect to the site. She says going forward, she will be spreading the word about the new domain.

Unfortunately for the chamber, however, the top-ranked Google result for a search for "Barriere chamber of commerce" is still the now-pornographic site.

If you have legitimate business in the District of Barriere and would like to connect with the chamber of commerce (and not a porn site), please visit barrierechamberofcommerce.com
