B.C. man destroys home with hatchet, say RCMP
A 38-year-old man is in custody, after he allegedly barricaded himself in his Port Alberni home during a six-hour hour standoff with police Friday.
Police say they were alerted to a drunken disturbance inside a home at Omoah Place around 7 p.m. PT Friday night.
When officers arrived, the man allegedly became confrontational and began destroying property inside the home with a hatchet.
The Island District RCMP emergency response team was dispatched and eventually forced their way into the home just before 2 a.m. PT.
The man, who has not been identified, was arrested without incident. A 15-year-old girl was also found in the home, unharmed.
Police say they did fire upon an aggressive, large breed dog, which charged towards them at the scene. The shots caused the dog to flee but it has now been found.
A search warrant has since been executed at the home and weapons were seized. Police say Usma Nuu-chah-nulth Family and Child Services is now involved.
Police are continuing to investigate but no charges have yet been laid.
The man will appear before a justice of the peace Saturday.
