B.C. fishing boat explodes into flames near Steveston

A fishing boat exploded into flames off Shady Island near Steveston, B.C. just after 6 p.m. PT Saturday.

Two men and a woman, some with burns, wind up in water but are rescued by nearby boaters

A fishing boat exploded into flames off  Shady Island near Steveston, B.C. just after 6 p.m. PT Saturday.

Two men and a woman were on board the boat at the time and ended up in the water, but were rescued by nearby boats which came to their aid.

A fishing boat was completely destroyed when it exploded off Steveston Saturday night. Two men and a woman were on board, but no one was seriously hurt. (Lorne Smith)

Lorne Smith, one of the rescuers on the water said it appears some of the victims were burned.

"We talked to the lady and she said the battery exploded on board, not why it blew up or anything else other than she said the battery exploded and then flames just ripped through the boat," he said.

Smith says none of the three were wearing life vests.

One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The fire was eventually put out, but the boat was destroyed.

The coast guard attended but two man and a woman aboard the vessel were first rescued by nearby fishing boats after their fishing boat was completely destroyed in the explosion. (Lorne Smith)
