Police in Surrey say that a possible abduction that was reported on Saturday night was a hoax.

A witness had called police to say that three men were seen exiting a 1990s, four-door Mercedes Benz sedan in front of the Shoppers Drug Mart in the parking lot of the Surrey Central City Mall around 5:50 p.m. PT Saturday. Two men then apparently forced the third into the trunk, and drove off with him locked inside.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said that a woman who had seen media coverage of the possible abduction called police Monday night to report that she saw the car parked near 130 Street and 103A Avenue.

Police officers were then able to locate and speak to the registered owner of the vehicle, and others. Police also spoke with the supposed victim, and were satisfied that the incident was a hoax.

"Our investigators treated this case as a serious incident from the time we received the call and this ultimately lead to its successful conclusion. Unfortunately the large amount of time and resources spent on this specific case could have been dedicated towards investigating real incidents," Paquet said in a written statement.

Paquet said the Surrey RCMP is thankful for the public's attention and assistance in locating the vehicle and persons responsible for the incident.

"Once again the assistance received from the public was crucial in advancing our investigation," he said.
