$700 parakeet birdnapped from pet store in Richmond

Police are appealing to the public for help after an exotic male parakeet known as Sky was stolen from a B.C. pet store on Sunday afternoon.

Police are appealing to the public for help after an exotic male parakeet worth $700 was stolen from a Richmond, B.C. pet store.

The one-year-old Indian Ringneck parakeet, known as Sky, was taken from Ackroyd Pets and Aquariums on Sunday, around 3 p.m. PT.

Police say an unidentified man simply walked in, grabbed the bird and stuffed it into a black shopping bag before fleeing the store.

"Sky is an exotic bird described as sweet and friendly by the pet store staff," said Corporal Stephanie Ashton of Richmond RCMP in a press release. "He won’t survive if released or if he escapes."

Police have released a security camera image of the suspect, who is described as a Caucasian man, aged between 35 and 40 years old and around five feet 10 inches tall.

He has a heavy build, dark hair and was wearing glasses, a blue striped dress shirt, jean shorts and black sandals at the time of the theft.

Sky is powder blue with a red beak and measures approximately half a metre long, including a lengthy tail. The parakeet has certification papers and a metal ringband on one of his legs.
