Bloc Qubcois whip Pierre Brien says he's quitting the party to run for the Action Democratique du Quebec in the upcoming provincial election.

The member of Parliament for Temiscamingue will sit as an independent in the House of Commons until the ADQ calls a nomination meeting in the provincial riding of Rouyn-Noranda-Temiscamingue.

The departure of Brien, 32, leaves the BQ with 36 of Quebec's 75 seats in Ottawa.

It's the third time in less than a year that a Bloc MP has left the party, in each case to run provincially.
