Honda has expanded a previously announced recall to include 600,000 Accord sedans across North America that risk an engine fire because of leaky power steering fluid.

The company is recalling 573,147 Accords between the model years 2003 and 2007 in the United States, and 30,058 in Canada.

The problem stems from a power steering hose that may crack or rupture under high temperatures. That could cause a lack of power steering, or possibly smoke or even fire in the V-6 version of the engine, Honda says.

No accidents or injuries related to the issue have been reported, but there is one documented instance of an engine fire, the automaker said.

Dealers will fix hoses

The issue was part of an older recall of Acura cars that Honda extended to its popular Accord model on Monday.

Honda will replace the hoses for free, but it won't have the parts available until early next year. Any owner who suspects a leak should take their car to a dealer for inspection, Honda spokesman Ed Miller said Monday.

The company that makes the Accord's power-steering hoses had to ramp up manufacturing to make them since the affected cars are more than five model years old and the hoses were out of production, Miller said.

"We're going to start making them and getting them out there as soon as we can," he said.
