The Toronto Stock Exchange eked out a modest gain Friday before the world's major currency and stock markets closed for the Christmas holiday.

The TSX closed at 13,383.16 points, up 11.95 points on the day, in very light trading. The venture exchange was also higher, closing up 12.04 points to 2,187.4.

Canada's benchmark S&P/TSX composite index was up roughly 1.37 per cent for the week, the second-last trading week of 2010.

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq markets in the United States were both closed.

The Canadian dollar was trading at 99.36 cents US when the TSX closed on Friday, up 0.24 cents US.
