The media company that purchased the National Post and 10 other major newspapers from Canwest Global Communications will be called Postmedia Network Inc., CEO Paul Godfrey announced Friday.

The announcement comes as the sale of the newspapers to a group of Canwest's creditors for $1.1 billion nears completion.

"Postmedia Network reflects both where we have been and where we are going," Godfrey said in a release.

"From the earliest days of information delivery via post, to the current online world of posting news and information as it happens and looking ahead to the continuous evolution of a post-media universe, our new name reflects both the strong legacy and the exciting future of media as we prepare to emerge as a new Canadian business," he said.

"It’s a very exciting time for us and this is only the beginning," Godfrey said.

In addition to the Post, Postmedia Network will include the Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen, Windsor Star, Regina Leader-Post, Saskatoon StarPhoenix, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Vancouver Sun and Vancouver Province, and Victoria Times Colonist. It will also operate more than 20 community newspapers, online operations and other publications.

When the sale was announced in May, the creditor group said it intended to maintain all existing newspaper operations and provide continuing employment to all existing full-time employees and substantially all part-time employees. It also said the new company would maintain all employee pension and benefit plans.
