Toyota, Mazda and Ford were multiple winners of the federal government's annual ecoEnergy awards for the 2010 crop of automobiles.

Winning vehicles were determined by testing that simulates the car being driven 20,000 kilometres annually, 55 per cent of the time in the city and 45 per cent on highways.

The awards are handed out by Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency.

A total of 13 vehicles were named in 10 classes:

Here's the list of award winners, followed by the vehicle's expected annual fuel cost at $1 a litre for regular gasoline:

  • Best compact: Honda Civic Hybrid, $900
  • Best full size: Hyundai Sonata, $1,600
  • Best mid size: Toyota Prius, $760, most efficient overall
  • Best subcompact: Toyota Yaris, $1,240
  • Best two-seater: Smart fortwo (coupe), $1,188
  • Best station wagon: Audi A3 TDI tied with Volkswagen Golf Wagon TDI Clean Diesel, $1,276
  • Best pickup truck: Mazda B2300 tied with Ford Ranger, $1,700
  • Best special purpose vehicle: Ford Escape Hybrid, $1,220
  • Best minivan: Mazda5, $1,680
  • Best large van: GMC Savana and Chevrolet Express Cargo, $2,460

"Our government congratulates all winners of the 2010 ecoEnergy for Vehicles Awards," Natural Resources Minister Lisa Raitt said in a statement.

"Not only do these awards recognize leadership in clean energy innovation, but Canadians purchasing a new vehicle now have the tools to choose a fuel-efficient model that will lower fuel costs and reduce emissions."
