Miguel Sebastian said Magna — based in Aurora, Ont. — will cut fewer jobs at the Opel car factory near Zaragoza as part of its planned takeover of Opel from General Motors.

He said the job cuts would total 900, compared with the 1,350 Magna had proposed earlier. Sebastian made his comments after a meeting between the two sides.

Spanish unions had threatened to strike for four days later this month over the issue of how many jobs would be lost. Union representative Pedro Bona said the strike could still happen if the agreement isn't ratified by workers at the plant.
