Minimum wage in Manitoba is going up by 25 cents an hour, the second such increase this year.
The changes, effective Oct. 1, mean the hourly minimum wage in Manitoba will be $9.
Labour and Immigration Minister Nancy Allan announced the increase on Monday, saying it would help about 28,000 people and keep Manitoba near the middle of the pack when it comes to minimum-wage rates among Canadian jurisdictions.
Manitoba's minimum wage was boosted by 25 cents, to $8.75 an hour, on May 1. It has been incrementally increased on a regular basis since 1999, when it was $6, Allan said.
"It is important to continue to help lower-income earners by boosting spending power, while at the same time minimizing impacts on business with the staggered increase," she said.
There are no plans to bump up the rate in the short term, Allan said, adding that future increases would be examined by the labour management review committee, which includes representatives from both labour and management.
