The Toronto market lost ground in a broadly based decline Tuesday as U.S. markets trimmed early losses toward the end of the session.

The benchmark S&P/TSX composite index fell 186.89 points to close at 10,570.54

Only the health sub index was up. All the others were down, with the biggest drops in gold and materials.

1-month TSX trading1-month TSX trading The composite had touched 10,521 shortly before noon before starting to come back, but turned down again just before the end of trading.

In the United States, the Dow Jones closed down 11.79 points to 9,096.72. The drop was attributed to a report showing consumer confidence was weaker than expected.

The Dow had been down as much as 100 points before it recovered.

The Nasdaq index, which had been as low as 1,948, closed up 7.62 points at 1,975.51.
