A gloomy economic forecast did not deter Manitobans from checking out recreational toys at the Manitoba RV Show and Sale, held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre over the weekend.
The crowd on opening night was twice as large as it was on opening night last year.
A week ago, the Mid-Canada Boat Show, which was held in the same building, reported record-setting attendance.
Exhibitors said people weren't just gawking at the extravagant items; some were buying.
Dave Shepherd, sales manager at Pik-a-Dilly RV Centre in Brandon, told CBC News that current sales figures are higher than they were last year at this time. He believes it is the big bargains that are bringing in buyers.
Shepherd and other RV dealers said the market has gone soft south of the border and in many parts of Canada, forcing dealers and manufacturers to cut prices.
For example, one motorhome Shepherd is offering for sale has been reduced by about $56,000 from the regular retail price.
Show visitor Wayne Barbeau was eyeing the bargains. He said he's been attending the annual RV show for years and said there's been no better time to stop kicking tires and just jump in.
"The economy's so depressed economically right now and there are some good deals to be had," he said.
"We're getting the benefit of the lower pricing coming from other areas, as well as a good solid dealership base here, so it gives us the best of both worlds," said Jim Flood, manager of the Manitoba RV Show and Sale.
