Bell said Tuesday it has recovered data on 3.4 million of its customers in Quebec and Ontario that was stolen more than four weeks ago.
Montreal police searched two locations Tuesday and arrested one person, the company said. The data was recovered.
Bell said the information taken included names, addresses, phone numbers and the Bell services subscribed to. It did not include any financial details, credit card numbers, or billing or calling details. No data on cell phone numbers was stolen.
But it did include information on about 170,000 unlisted and unpublished phone numbers.
Bell began to contact those customers directly on Tuesday, Bell spokesman Mark Langton told CBCNews.ca.
"There's no indication that this data has been used improperly," Langton said, adding that Bell will, on request, give a new unlisted number to anyone whose unpublished number had been stolen.
The theft was discovered in mid-January following a tip. The stolen data was shopped around to a number of people, Langton said. One of those people notified authorities.
It's not known how the arrested person, who is not a Bell employee, got the data.
